It was another successful year for students in the media and film department at the annual WJEC Moving Image Awards. The event, which took place at the famous BFI Southbank, is an annual celebration of the best moving image production work made by students aged 14-19 at schools and colleges from across the UK and overseas.

Students also had the opportunity to network with industry professionals and meet other young creatives.  As well as this, they were treated to an excellent and inspiring talk by Kate Leys, a feature film script editor, whose experience includes commissioning ‘Trainspotting’ and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ whilst Head of Development at Film Four. 

This year there were five award categories with students from the College being nominated in three.  Evie Gordon and Francis Cousins, were nominated for their short film ‘Cipid’s House.’ The judges described the work as “a haunting and beautifully shot piece.”

The music video category saw two nominations, Arianne Lopez Wyld for her reggaeton inspired music video ‘Algo Contigo’, which the judges said was, “an uplifting and excellent example of genre conventions,” and Leah Jones for ‘Flawless’ which encourages the audience to consider the representation of women and which the judges called “visually stunning and thought provoking.”

The highlight of the ceremony was Georgia Sullivan winning Best TV Extract for her documentary ‘Everyone Loves Lauren.’  The film focuses on Georgia’s sister Lauren who has multiple sclerosis. The judges were full of praise for this inspiring and heartfelt piece that captivated the audience from the first frame, “mature, moving and expertly constructed.”

After these five categories, there was also a highly commended section, in which three student projects were recognised; ‘No Man’s Land,’ a short film by Sarah Lody, ‘Box Cutter,’ an opening sequence by Daniel Harden and ‘66,’ a screenplay by Bethany Seymour.

Our students thoroughly enjoyed the evening and relished the opportunity to see their work played on the big screen at such a prestigious location.

Dan McGrath, Curriculum Manager for film studies commented, “It was a fantastic evening and we were so proud to see so many of our students recognised for their hard work and creative talent. It really does reflect just how strong the work produced by our students is”.
