Student exhibit at the Tate Modern
Posted on 15 June 2018

Since January, students in both the modern history and graphic design departments have been working on an exhibition for Tate Modern. The theme was World War One: Production, Destruction and the Avant Garde and focused on Italian and German art movements of the early Twentieth Century.

The project was devised by Royal Holloway University and students had to research and prepare materials to present at the exhibition. Lecturers from the university chose nine pieces of art for the students to focus on. Modern history students wrote about the artist and historical context that shaped the artists views and work and graphic design students designed the promotional material for the exhibition including the information booklet given to guests.

On the day of the exhibition, students presented their findings to staff, students and invited guests. After their presentations, they ran a workshop, designing pieces of collage art inspired by the artists they had studied.

Curriculum Manager for modern history David Brown commented, “The students were a credit to the College, both the quality of their work and ability to present their ideas to a large audience in such a prestigious setting was fantastic.  It was excellent to see groups from different subjects work collaboratively together.  Photography student Charlotte Fraser, was also given a brilliant opportunity by Royal Holloway University to be the official photographer for the exhibition.  This event was a resounding success, thank you to all students and staff involved, Professor Giuliana Pieri at the Royal Holloway University and the Tate Modern.”
