Hannah Semeraro from The University of Southampton recently came to the College to talk to 23 budding Audiologists about her specialist subject area. As a lecturer, admissions officer and practicing NHS Audiologist, Hannah gave an informative talk on the role of an audiologist and the progression routes into careers in this area.
Hannah highlighted the positive and fulfilling interactions she has with her patients due to the unique nature of audiology, whereby practitioners follow their patients progress over many years, therefore developing a strong relationship with them. Hannah discussed the nature of hearing loss and used case studies to highlight the range of people who use the audiology service, from the elderly to parents of newborn babies.
The UK currently has a national shortage of audiologists and Hannah said that everyone from her course at Southampton had found employment within six months of completing the course.
The students were very positive about the talk, the possibilities audiology offered and the interactive sound activity they took part in. We even had to extend the question and answer session at the end - it was great to see students engaged and interested in this very unique field!
