Curriculum Manager for Health and Social Care at the College, Dr Susie Nyman, was recently invited to speak at the annual Tes SEN Show, the largest and most well established special educational needs show in the UK. Nearly 5,000 attendees visited the event over several days which took place at the Business Design Centre in London.
Susie was asked to deliver a seminar entitled 'Unravelling The Neurons of the Brain Using Multi-Sensory Teaching' to around 200 SEN professionals – some would think this a daunting task but not Susie!
The seminar was a lively and interactive presentation, with Susie detailing how her teaching methods continue to inspire young people with dyslexia to become grade risers and ultimately achieve outstanding results. Susie showcased tried, tested and easy to replicate multi-sensory techniques she uses both on a one to one basis and with large groups in the classroom. These innovative techniques have also been published as part of the multi-sensory toolkit in the latest edition of ‘BDA Dyslexia Friendly Schools Good Practice Guide’, released in April 2018.
The atmosphere in the seminar was electric with the audience participating in activities such as balloon modelling the digestive system, Grandpa's House (with a special appearance by puppet Father Ted), as well as a 'walk-in heart' made out of a large satin tablecloth.
Some of the comments sent to Susie by the delegates afterwards included:
“Thank you for an inspiring session today!”
“I wanted to say thank you very much for your great seminar. I really enjoyed it.”
“Your applications to science teaching are really creative and memorable.”
Congratulations to Susie on such an inspirational and well received seminar!
