Students packed out Cafe D for the 'Live Lunch'

New students were welcomed to life@Farnborough, with a host of fun activities and informative events during our Freshers’ Week.

Opportunities to get involved included:

Blue Day for Jeans for Genes, which saw staff and students wearing anything blue, from a pair of jeans to dressing as a Smurf or a member of the Blues Brothers, raising £270 for the charity.

'Live Lunch' on the Friday saw a continuation of the Blues theme, with staff and students entertaining with music from the genre.

At lunchtime and breaks throughout the week, there were ice cream vans on site, candy floss for all, henna, face painting and hair chalks as well as the very popular photo booth to record the occasion with friends.

Tara Bharadia, Communications Officer on the Student Association (SA) commented, “We are so glad that the Freshers enjoyed the week! All the hard work of the SA paid off and it was well worth it to welcome all the first years to College."

Student soundbites from throughout the week included:

“I've always wanted to get henna done.”

“The photo booth was such a fun way to remember the week!”

“I love all these free sweets!”

Our annual Freshers’ Fayre took place on the Thursday, providing the chance for 47 voluntary organisations and businesses to let students know about their services.

College clubs and societies were also there, showcasing all that is on offer for students to get involved in during their time here.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue gave a safe driving demonstration, highlighting dangers and re-enacting a rescue with student volunteers.

Exhibitors at our Freshers’ Fayre included:

Rob Tiller, Owner/Director of Accelerate Driver Training who said, “This is our 4th year at Freshers’ Fayre and every year it gets better.”

Dan Greenwood, Children and Young People FDO, Hampshire FA commented that the event was, “possibly the best college Freshers’ Fayre in the county, well organised and well attended.”

Sue O'Flinn, Community Fundraiser, Step by Step said, “This is the best Freshers' Fayre I've been to.”

Katy Marlow, our Community Engagement Manager, summed up the week, “What a fantastic Freshers’ Week! The activities planned by the Student Association made sure our new students felt welcomed, socialised with new people outside the classroom and were able to settle into College life, whilst creating some great memories from the outset.”

To round off the week, Vue Cinemas put on a free screening, for over 300 of our students, at their new cinema in Farnborough.
