The Quad became very busy
Freshers’ Week was a fantastic event, filled with fun activities for everyone to get involved in. It offered great opportunities for both First and Second Years to feel a real part of the College by signing up for our amazing enrichment programme of Clubs and Societies!
Tuesday 24th October Volleyball Match:
We kicked things off in spectacular style with an incredible game of volleyball between students and staff. There's no need to say who came out victorious, as even those watching lost track of the scoreline when the students ran riot, showing no mercy! It was all good-natured, with plenty of gasps and cheers from the crowd as points were scored on both sides. Not only that, but the Krispy Kremes were a massive hit and sold out in record time! It was an event not to be missed.
Wednesday 25th Music Performance:
The fun continued on Wednesday with the appearance of Barli, the College’s therapy dog at lunchtime in the Quad. Barli, a two-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog, enjoyed all the attention from students and, despite her young age, remained very calm - perfect for students to say hello and relieve some stress.
Following Tuesday’s fast-selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts, it’s fair to say the churro sale was just as popular. With the added bonus of a chocolate sauce dip, it’s no surprise they sold out so quickly!
The big event, of course, was the live music in the Quad, where our very talented musicians - Lewis, Oli and Miles - performed classic hits which drew a large crowd, and created a great atmosphere. Lewis opened up with some big tunes on the guitar, playing fan favourites including “Rock ‘n’ Roll Star” and “Live Forever” by Oasis. As the music continued, support grew from fellow students as Oli and Miles took over.
Miles, who has become accustomed to this sort of stage, has performed multiple times in the Quad as well as at last year’s much-loved SixFest. Oli brought the early 2000s vibe, starting with Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’ while Miles accompanied on the keyboard, delivering a fantastic performance. The afternoon wrapped up Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’ and Nina Simone’s ‘Feeling Good’, a fitting end to a great showing of musical talent that brought much applause from the audience.
Thursday 26th – Clubs and Societies Fair
The end of the week provided a chance for the College to showcase its wide range of societies and clubs. The diversity and variety of clubs to join were incredible, offering everything from Engineering, Politics, Debate Club and the Spanish & Flamenco Society to Chess Club and the newly formed Comic Club.
With the added bonus of free sweets and snacks, it was no wonder the Sports Complex was bustling with activity from start to finish. Every stall you passed had sign-up sheets filled with signatures.
Despite a slightly damp and drizzly Thursday, that didn’t stop students from queuing up in the Quad for deliciously cold ice cream, offered at very affordable prices.
It was a fantastic week overall for the College, thoroughly enjoyed by students! For First Year Students in particular, Freshers' Week was especially important, providing a warm welcome to college life and helping them settle in by making new friends and exploring all the opportunities on offer. We are excited to have them as part of our College community and look forward to all the incredible things they'll achieve in the years ahead!
