The Ethics Cup - regional heats

Farnborough Philosophers

Early on a very cold a frosty morning the Farnborough Ethics team made the trip out to Caterham School to complete in the Regional Round of the Ethics Cup.

During the competition, two teams of between 3 and 5 members sit on tables facing each other (and the judges) and toss a coin to decide which team is A and which is B. An ethical problem, called a case, is then randomly selected and Team A are called to present an analysis of the case. This is followed by questions firstly from the opposite team and then the judging panel.

A new case is then chosen and the process repeated with the teams’ swapping roles.

Our Farnborough team’s first match was against Thomas Tallis School who, following a civil and respectful exchange were awarded the win against our brave Farnborough team.

Next up was Christ’s Hospital school - both teams scored highly and despite the Judges commending Farnborough for being so relaxed, happy and team spirited, Christ’s got slightly more points.

We moved through to the Semi Final which consisted of the top four scoring teams playing against one another (1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd). This meant Farnborough versus Caterham, the home team!

We won the coin toss and selected to be Team B. We were given a challenging topic to defend about the right to use torture in a global terrorism situation. Our team concocted a nuanced argument, but it proved hard to defend and they were pipped at the post by the team from Caterham who went on to win the competition overall.

Despite the result, it was a friendly and supportive competition and the team from Farnborough did the College proud, showing themselves to be friendly, cheerful, diverse and keenly intelligent. Well done to all!!
