Sports Round Up
Posted on 22 October 2015

Whilst the England Rugby Team has struggled to bring their A-game during the World Cup, the College’s sports teams have been excelling during World Cup fever.

The Hockey team’s first competition of the season was the Hampshire Invitational Mixed 7’s tournament, with our team lifting the trophy in a 1-0 win over Brockenhurst College in the final.

The Swimming team headed to Guildford Spectrum to compete in the Surrey round of the Schools relay competitions. As there was no Hampshire event this year, the team got the opportunity to go up against the Surrey schools. Our women’s team won both their relays comfortably, a length ahead of the rest of the field, and our men’s team came second and third in the Medley and Freestyle relay behind Reed’s School. Both teams are still waiting to hear if they have qualified for Nationals which will be held at the London Aquatic Centre on 21 November 2015.

The men’s Basketball team have had their first two matches of the Premier League and have had two fantastic wins, beating Richard Taunton College 73-45 and Barton Peveril 61-38. The women’s team also had a fantastic first game against Peter Symonds, winning with a final score of 43-19.

The Football team have won their first two rounds of the National Cup against Reigate College and Sparsholt College. The women’s Football team also had a 10-1 victory over Chichester College.

The South East Regional Tournaments have begun with students competing in a variety of sports to represent the South East at National Championships in April 2016. The campaign started with golf; students Tom Farrow-Smith and Nathan Gipson finished in second and 13th place respectively. Tom will now go on to the National Championships. The Badminton team have also had success with Stirling Burrow winning the men’s singles and Idris Sabur and Steph Davis the mixed doubles.

The second round of the tournament saw both the women's football team and the men's hockey team finish as runners up. Daisy D'Santos, second year student, won the cross country and Jack Boswell, first year student, came second. The women's swimming team won, ahead of second place Peter Symonds and the men's swimming team also won, beating second place Peter Symonds by a point. 14 students have now qualified for the National Championships.

Basingstoke Rugby Club have kindly been delivering free weekly coaching sessions to students of all abilities and experience. Four of our students are already attending Hampshire trials after only three weeks of coaching.

Good luck to all!
