The winning team
On 15 June 2015, a team of students from the College won the KS5 Group Category, in the eigth annual National Animation Competition, organised by the University of Manchester.
With 822 entries from 1057 students, representing 127 schools, from across the country, the aim of the competition is to get young people engaged with Computer Science and to highlight how computing can be creative.
The winning animation was announced on YouTube, where the films can be viewed.
Leading the team was Chloe Whittall, who along with Hannah Collen, Daniel Lavorchik and Thomas Lucas, put together a thought provoking film with the aim of raising awareness of staying safe on the internet. First year student, Sofiya Andreeva assisted the team with voice acting.
Chloe Whittall commented, “The animation was based around the theme of internet safety reflecting one of the themes of the competition. We hope to enter again next year, perhaps with more teams. Most of our team had no prior animation knowledge, so we hope others will take the opportunity to enter next time.”
Thomas Lucas added, “I am very proud of what our team created and am looking forward to raising the standard even higher if we enter again next year.”
Lalin Pethiyagoda, Curriculum Manager for A-Level Computing, commented, “The students have worked extremely hard to produce the animation video and have made us all very proud by winning first place. Their enthusiasm and ability to work as a team have played an important role in winning this great accolade. They have been magnificent ambassadors for the Computer Science Department and the College as a whole."
