Students at the Garrison

Students from the College stepped out of their comfort zone when they recently attended a week's work placement with Aldershot Garrison.

A busy week started on day one when the students met several of the units that reside in the Garrison and spent the day in familiarisation activities.

The next two days involved a placement with HQ 101 Logistic Brigade and HQ Aldershot Garrison learning how both units carry out daily duties. Students worked in groups to carry out tasks that had been set.

The final two days were spent at Minley Station, which is home to 3 RSME Regiment (Royal School of Military Engineering). Students were working in the field with the Army Outreach Team. Sessions included patrolling, learning how to read ground signs and a number of command tasks.

This was the first time that the Army and its contractors, Aspire Defence Services Ltd, have run this placement project, which has been judged by all involved to be a resounding success. It is hoped that they will repeat the project in the future.

Christine Eustace, Project Manager for the Community Matters Partnership Project commented, "A total of 26 young people from our local community have benefitted from the experience of working with the Army this week in areas as diverse as events management, communications and radio broadcasting. In addition, these young people have been challenged physically, emotionally and mentally over a two day team challenge event, which will allow them to evidence those vital employability skills of team work, leadership, resilience, reliability and so much more. I cannot thank the staff of Aldershot Garrison HQ, 101 Logistics Brigade and the Army Outreach Team enough for helping to make this happen".
