Student 'Meet the Mentor'

Inspiring those studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM), the College is partnering with Fluor, to deliver e-Mentoring.  This November our third successive cohort of students, will take part in this initiative.  For the first time on Friday 6 November we hosted a “Meet the Mentor” introduction session when students and Mentors met up face to face, to begin their collaboration.

By taking part in the programme, students are given the opportunity to investigate STEM careers, under the guidance of mentors from Fluor, who are taking time out from their busy global schedules to provide advice and guidance to our students.

The Mentors support students by sharing their knowledge and experiences of working in Engineering. Using a system developed by ex-student Elliot Rosemeyer, students and mentors message each other electronically, enabling them to communicate around their busy schedules and across time zones.

Baljinder Sangha, Careers Advisor at the College said “Our students are extremely privileged to be working with such highly qualified and experienced Mentors, from Fluor.  The programme continues to go from strength to strength, supporting our students to make informed decisions about their future plans.”

James Hayward from Fluor said "The eMentoring programme is a great way for Fluor to support the engineers of the future and create a long term legacy to the community and the engineering profession. Our mentors really enjoy sharing their knowledge and giving guidance to the students and the feedback has been excellent. Given project schedules, our employees can't always go into the College itself, so eMentoring is a great way for us to help make a difference."

Students taking part in the programme commented

Being offered the chance to interact with a professional, in the field you're interested in, is remarkable. Having only just started my A levels means my career is both far away and extremely close and this can be quite overwhelming. Without being able to talk to someone I would still be very confused as to what I want to do and how to get there. The E-Mentoring system provides the opportunity to talk to someone with first-hand experience. Thanks to Fluor I have discovered that engineering is a very broad field and also a very exciting one. I cannot wait to see where life will take me!”- Jane Prowse

"The programme gives students an insight into the world of engineering under the guidance of experienced, full time engineers.  Contacting the Mentors by e-mail is easy and they are always happy to answer any questions we may have.  The E-Mentoring programme is a great way to bridge the gap between education and application."- Jonny Francis
