Promoting health and wellbeing

Health and social care students, currently studying Health Promotion Campaigns, helped out in a recent College-wide Chlamydia Screening programme held in Café Direct. All staff and students were fantastically supported by the College Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator, Kirsten Halvorsen, as well as Lauren Clarke and Natalie D’Anna Brown from the Hampshire Sexual Health Promotion Team.

Students were made aware of the benefits of volunteering for Chlamydia Screening:

  • To reduce the levels of Chlamydia infection
  • To raise awareness of Chlamydia infection and why we need to test for it, helping to reduce myths and stigma attached to STI’s and fears associated with accessing local services
  • To normalise accessing services to sexual health for young people.

Over 125 students were tested as part of the Chlamydia Screening Programme, which was an excellent response.

Dr Susie Nyman, Curriculum Manager Health and Social Care said “It is wonderful for our students to be involved in a real-life National Screening Programme.  Many thanks to Dan Clerkin from the Hampshire Sexual Health Promotion Team for sharing his expertise and educating our Health and Social Care students about the National Chlamydia Screening Programme.”
