Graphic Designs on recipes
Posted on 14 December 2015

Aspiring young designer Hannah Neil has lent her creative skills to help the Mayor of Rushmoor, Councillor Martin Tennant, to produce a fundraising recipe book.

Hannah, a Fine Art, Media Studies and Graphic Design student at the College, had her designs chosen to illustrate the Mayor’s charity recipe collection “Family Favourites”, from among a number of entries submitted by our students.

The recipe book, described as “An eclectic mix of family favourite recipes from the borough of Rushmoor and its friends”, is now being sold to raise funds for the Mayor’s three charities:

  • Hospitality Action - a benevolent fund for those who have worked in the hospitality industry
  • Mike Jackson House, Aldershot - which provides accommodation and support for homeless veterans
  • Radio BGWS - Nepalese community radio

The dozens of recipes in the book include everything from chicken in black bean sauce and ham in white wine to raspberry meringue dessert and sherry trifle – all with personal twists on traditional recipes.

The Mayor called into College on Wednesday, 9 December, to thank Hannah for her work saying “It was difficult to choose a winner from among the entries but Hannah’s design stood out because it was clean and stylish and I think it perfectly summed up the great mix of different recipes we received.  The recipe book will make a great Christmas present for everyone who likes to try their hand at cooking – from those who know their way around the kitchen to those who just fancy having a go!

Hannah said: “I was inspired by different foods from around the world to represent the different cultures in the Borough and twin towns. This has been a really good opportunity to develop my skills as a designer, as I hope to study Graphic Design when I finish at College.”

Ben Hasking, Subject Tutor Graphic Design added “The Mayor's Cookbook brief presented students with an opportunity to see their own work in print and the outcome is superb. We're really glad that the Graphic Design Department could be involved in the project and that Hannah's work was selected. This sort of live brief and engagement with community projects, provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate the talent which is reflected in the exceptional grades they achieve and their progression beyond College.”

Copies of “Family Favourites” cost £7.50 and are available from Bethney Butchers, Queen’s Road, North Camp or Gray’s coffee in Lynchford Road, North Camp.

Alternatively they can be bought here or from the council offices in Farnborough or the Princes Hall in Aldershot.
