Music Scholars Concert
Posted on 12 February 2016

The Music department welcomed in the New Year with its first concert of 2016 on 4 February in the historic setting of St Peter’s Church, Farnborough. Newly refurbished, the church, which dates back to the 1200s, proved the ideal venue for this evening of chamber music performed by the College’s talented music scholars. The concert proved the perfect antidote to those winter blues and an enthusiastic audience was treated to an eclectic and vibrant programme performed with real commitment and musicianship.

Music Scholars commented after the event:

I really enjoyed this wonderful opportunity to play chamber music and collaborate with other scholars. The standard was incredibly high and to see everyone working so well together made for a really memorable event. “ - Marta Mungai

Having the opportunity to work on and perform chamber music with such talented musicians, in a venue such as this, was a quite amazing experience. As musicians, we all learned so much.” - Dylan Kirk

"The concert provided not only the opportunity to perform some fantastic music; but also to do this in the company of friends and fellow musicians. The whole event was so lovely and everyone who I spoke to afterwards said exactly the same." - Emily Beech

"We are so fortunate to be given the opportunity to make great music with other people of the same age with the same interests and ambitions. These concerts are always a highlight of my year." - Christopher Brewster

Matthew Sheppard, Director of Faculty, heaped praise upon the students. “This was a magnificent evening of sublime Chamber music, from Doppler to Bach, Mozart to Mendelssohn and world premieres of student compositions. A truly inspiring evening in the company of such prodigious talent, the College are rightly proud of the Scholars who must be amongst the finest musicians of their age in the country.”

Curriculum Manager, Harry White, added “It’s been a hugely busy year already for the Music Department. Historically, this is always one of our most highly anticipated concerts. We are very fortunate to have such an ideal venue for chamber music right on our doorstep in St Peter’s and it proved a wonderful setting for our musicians to perform. The concept behind this concert has always been as much about the journey as the final event and we were delighted by the manner in which the students approached this; learning to rehearse together, moving beyond the notes and exploring the intricate subtleties of chamber music together. Making high-class music together with friends has always been at the heart of the Scholarship.”
