Choral Society and Chamber Choir Concert

On Thursday 17 March St Andrew's Garrison Church, Aldershot played host to the College’s Choral Society and Chamber Choir Concert. After their recent triumph in The Royal Memorial Chapel Sandhurst, the 130-strong student chorus moved and inspired a packed house with a programme of English song and opera.

The evening began with the Chamber Choir performance of the early Elgar madrigal ‘My love dwelt in a northern land’- a work sung with supreme control and tenderness. The centre-piece of the evening came in the form of a concert version of Vaughan Williams’ opera ‘Hugh the Drover’, a 50 minute work of supreme magnitude and difficulty.

Singing with a full, professional symphony orchestra, the College’s Choral Society amazed the audience with the power, conviction and quality of their singing. The College also welcomed back two former students, Mimi Doulton and Steve Mills, who performed solo roles within the Cantata.

Speaking after the Concert, Mimi said “I couldn’t wait to sing with this mighty army of sixth form musicians! The Choir were fabulous and so energising. This is music education at its very best.”

Matthew Sheppard, Director of Teaching and Quality, spoke with passion of the extraordinary achievements of the College’s students “This was yet another magnificent music concert. In the illustrious surroundings of St Andrew's Garrison Church the voices of the Chamber Choir and Choral Society soared high into the church vaults. The music was performed with such peerless perfection the rapt audience could have easily felt that all on show were seasoned professionals. This was truly an inspirational evening, forming rich memories!”

Harry White, Curriculum Manager for Musical Performance said, “I am utterly in awe of the talent, energy, musicality and commitment of all the students involved. Their performance had everything; a moving esprit de corps, fearless singing and, above all, supreme musicianship. That so many students from across the College community have performed a work of such magnitude to such a phenomenal standard in only 9 weeks almost defies belief. This was a truly special evening; the perfect example of why this College is such a unique place in which students can blossom.”
