On 13 April, our 2016/17 Travel Scholars were presented with their scholarships by Deputy Principal, Catherine Cole.
It has been an impressive year for applications from students wishing to become Travel Scholars, not only in terms of the number of applications received but for the various destinations chosen and different projects that are planned. We have been able to assist 15 young people in developing their personal and social skills through participation in overseas projects this year. It is extremely inspiring that so many of our students are volunteering their time and skills overseas to improve the situations of so many people in less fortunate circumstances. Not only that, they are creating an incredibly rewarding experience for themselves. The lessons learned and challenges undertaken will benefit and stay with them for their whole life.
Our Travel Scholars have worked hard fund-raising to pay for their expeditions and have demonstrated a strength of determination which will stand them in good stead while taking part in their chosen ventures. Projects this year range from instilling self-confidence and self-esteem in orphans in India, elephant conservation in Thailand, nursing in Tanzania, a community development project in Cambodia, Scientific research in the Peruvian Rainforest and caring for Pandas in a reserve in China! Projects range in length from 2 weeks to 6 months.
We strongly believe that the impact of cultural immersion on these young people is an incredibly valuable education in itself, which is why we are proud, once again, to offer Travel Scholarships to our students.
