Sports Awards 2016
Posted on 17 June 2016

Our Sports Awards 2016 recognise the fantastic contributions of our students after another successful year of sporting performance at the College.

Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Harry Warner in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the football 1st XI and the cricket team.  Harry played a vital role in helping the football 1st XI reach the quarter finals of the national cup where he saved two penalties and scored one in the last 16 matchup.  At the end of the 14/15 season, Harry won the league cup final with the cricket team and has now, as captain, led them to the final again which will be played at the end of June.

Sportswoman of the Year went to netball co-captain, Hannah McClay.  Hannah led the netball team to a second place finish in the league and was a stand-out player throughout the season. On top of this, Hannah competes at national level in athletics (400m), and is one of the highest rated athletes in her age group.

The men's football team's 1st XI won this year’s Team of the Year award after a season that will go down in College history.  Winning the league cup for the first time in 30 years capped off a superb season, one in which they also reached the national cup quarter finals.  After sadly losing on penalties, the team carried on and rose to a third place finish in one of the most competitive leagues in college sport.  Special mention goes to Sam Pedersen and Louie Paget for their goal-scoring capabilities, and to Oliver Macallan for maintaining a consistently high level of football throughout the year.

The Mike Ritchie Memorial Award recognises outstanding contribution to sport, and this year it was awarded to the women's swimming team.  The team triumphed at the Surrey and Hampshire regional meeting, finishing in first place.  Our swimmers also qualified for the national finals, which were held at the London Aquatics Centre.  They finished third overall and above prestigious southern rivals Millfield who have a highly-regarded swimming academy.

The newly founded women's rugby team, including RFU ambassador Annabel Rice, were awarded with this year's London Legacy Award for going above and beyond their college sport duties.  Annabel took time out of her own schedule to help organise the team, inter-college fixtures and increase general participation in the College.  Now that Annabel and the other team members have laid the foundations for the women's rugby team, we have been able to organise competitive fixtures against other colleges in Hampshire for the next academic year.  We hope that this team can bring more success to the College in the coming years.
