For the fourth year running, the College has participated in ‘Words for Charity’, a joint Polish/British contest promoting the European Day of Languages. In the competition, all correct answers are rewarded which a donation of rice which is given to those in need.
Students from Farnborough competed with students from a school in Rushmoor’s twin town of Sulechów in Poland. As well as ‘earning’ a rice donation, the competition aims to improve students’ vocabulary and awareness of social issues.
In Poland the finalists were Nicola Jedrzychowska, Wiktoria Sieniuc and Szymon Makarewicz. Teachers at the school commented how rewarding it was to see how immensely involved the students were in each stage of the competition.
Nicola commented, “In my opinion, such projects are brilliant for young people - competing with the British team was really thrilling.“
Meanwhile at the College, each class of first year English A level students took part in the competition, with the two best competitors from each group going through to a final round. In the final, the three top scorers were students Sandy Kaushik, Rhiannon Asante and Sofie Watkins.
Dominic Eady, Senior Curriculum Manager for English said, “We have been participating in the Words for Charity competition for a few years now and it is a great way to bring the year to a close, using students’ increasing knowledge of English for a good cause and to maintain our links with our fellow students and teachers at the Liceum Ogólnoksztalcace in Sulechów, Poland. Congratulations to all those who took part and we look forward to the Words for Charity 5 competition next year!”
