This year’s Psychology Film Review Competition attracted a record number of entries from students, but the winner was Selina Hutchins. Selina’s reviews of Whiplash and Inside Out both balanced psychological insight against appreciation of film-making processes to quite a remarkable degree. In particular, her review of Whiplash showed a sensitive appreciation of the nature of abusive relationships. Also comments about the role of colour in the visual representation of memories in Inside Out showed Selina to be capable of appreciating form as much as content.
Abby Goad came second with her review of Inside Out. In any other year, this review would almost certainly have triumphed given the sheer range of connections to psychological concepts that Abby was able to make, from models of memory to theories of emotion. Amirah Quiday came third with her review of We Need to Talk About Kevin - her comments about both the nature-nurture debate and psychopathy showed her to be capable of recognising some of the central themes in this film.
A brief ceremony was held to congratulate Selina, Abby and Amirah for doing so well in the competition and to present them with prizes. Selina chose a pair of cosy Freudian Slippers for her prize, Abby selected a Freud rubber duck, and Amirah chose a set of Freud coaster-rugs.
Congratulations!!!
