Two first year students from the College have been successful in their applications to the highly competitive Nuffield Research Placements. Nuffield Research Placements provide over 1,000 students each year with the opportunity to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. Students in the first year of a post-16 science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) course are eligible to apply. Placements are available across the UK, in universities, commercial companies, voluntary organisations and research institutions.
Applicants were required to submit an in-depth personal statement detailing why they wanted to take part, their future aspirations and their individual areas of interest. Students Saleena Limbu and Farjana Chowdhury who are both studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths, gained a six week placement with Thermo Fisher Scientific based in Basingstoke and took part in detailed scientific research looking at culture media products.
During the placement, students were able to work towards and achieve their Gold Crest Award, which is a fantastic addition to their CV and emphasises the unique opportunity in undertaking a Nuffield placement. Certificates were presented at the Winchester Science Centre, where students showcased their findings to parents, guest visitors and each other.
Farjana said, “The best part of the programme was gaining an insight into real-life research and the work involved in a laboratory. My experimental skills have improved and I have learnt a lot of new practical techniques.”
Saleena commented, “I really enjoyed getting to contribute to new scientific research. I have gained confidence in working independently and how to write up scientific reports.”
Taking part in this placement has supported both students in making an informed decision about the specific scientific pathway they are looking to follow after leaving the College.
Current first year students can apply for the 2017 Nuffield research placement from 24th October 2016. Click here to apply.
