Our annual Certificate Evening is a night of celebration dedicated to the remarkable achievements of all of the students who left in the summer of 2016.  As well as congratulating all of our leavers on their successes, the College singles out those students who have truly excelled throughout their time here, both academically and personally.

Principal, Simon Jarvis, welcomed students from the class of 2016 and their parents.  He said that they had surpassed expectations, achieving superb results in public examinations.  “Your incredible results are the cause for celebration.  You have practised long hours, worked hard, retained your focus and been taught by inspirational, talented teachers committed to the improvement of the young people in their care.”  He added, “I have no doubt that you and your peers will transform the world, not just taking opportunities but creating new ones.”

Simon welcomed the Guest of Honour Professor Andrea Nollent, Vice Chancellor and CEO of the University of Law as a “kindred spirit of the College having dedicated her career to improving the student experience whilst aligning HE courses to meet the needs of employers.”  Professor Nollent paid tribute to the brilliant success of College students this year adding that a good education was more than excellent results but involved challenge beyond the taught curriculum.  She urged all those present to seek and take advantage of opportunities in their lives as they had been encouraged to do whilst at the College.

The following are the Class of 2016 Special Award winners - those whose achievements or contribution to College life can justifiably be described as outstanding.  The College is grateful for the generous support of the sponsors who shared the evening with us:

The Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards were presented to Georgina Brown, Aidan Chapman, Emily Hampson, Emily Holmes and Oliver Woollard.

Awards for Outstanding Contribution to College Life were given to Charlie Crumpton, Charlie Flynn, Rebecca Marshall, Sol Harding, John Wynne-Jonmes, Hannah Doran, Natalie Harris, Emily Harris, Georgia Balchin, Isobel Carr and Bethany Wood.

The following students were presented the award for Outstanding Personal Achievement: Holly Freke, Amiee Bolger, Jack Smith, Katherine Jones, Max Armstrong, Ashleigh Muhunsu, Marie Graham, Lennon Moore, Hannah Comfort and Sinead Marais.

Joseph Head, Maximilian Lawrenson, Abel Gurung, Katie-Ruth Chapman and Smrita Thapa received The University of Winchester Progression Awards.

The University of Winchester EPQ Awards were presented to Joseph Bunting, Lauren Faulkner, Jonathan Smith and Adenike Onasanya.

The Accelerate Young Driver of the Year is given to a student who has adopted a diligent approach and recorded commendable test scores.  Founder of Accelerate Driver Training, Rob Tillier presented the award to Tyler Carter.

Eilidh Reid, who was one of the most active and committed members of the Music department as a singer, saxophonist and flautist, received the accolade of The Stephen Green Musical Volunteer of the Year.

The Steinberg Award for Excellence in Music Technology went to Esme Southern, whose skill, dedication and patience made her the ideal student for music technology.  As part of this award, Esme received the latest Steinburg music software package.

Rachel Brown-Duthie was presented with The Fujitsu Art Award for her incredible work and exceptional results in the three art subjects she studied at College.

Maisie Laslett received The Fujitsu Award for Exceptional Perseverance.

Barnabas Balint was The Community Matters Partnership Project Student Volunteer of the Year, completing over 400 hours of volunteering during his time at the College – he is now studying History at Exeter University.

The Fluor STEM Student of the Year was Ethan Froome who is now studying Mechanical with Automotive Engineering at The University of Bath.

The Chair of the Corporation, Andrew Needham, closed the evening by thanking not only the students, but all of the staff for what they do to make the College a brilliant place to study and work.
