Students from our fantastic media and film department excelled at the WJEC Moving Image Awards 2016 held in early January.  The event, which took place at the renowned BFI Southbank, is an annual celebration of the best moving image production work made by students aged 14-19 at schools and colleges from around the UK and overseas.

The event was a mixture of talks from industry professionals, including actress, writer and director Alice Lowe (Sightseers, Locke and Prevenge) and a traditional awards ceremony.  The event provided the students with opportunities to network with industry professionals and meet other young creatives.  Overall there were six categories, with students from the College being nominated in each one they had entered.  There were also special mentions for two other projects created by students from the College; The Last Girl by George Penfold, George Domm Power & Callum Tester and Viewfinder by Nicholas Prosser.

Joe McCarthy was nominated for his music video Don’t Say That - Superfood narrowly missing out on the award.  There was success for Francis Cousins and James Hastings with Remember Remember, an outstanding film extract that beat another project from the College called Albatross by Francis Cousins, Evie Gordon, Scott Bentley and Mheha Saravanan. The short film category was also won by second year student James Harvey for his animation, Cloud.

Anticipation was high for the final award of the evening, The WJEC Prize for Best Moving Image Work 2016, which was presented by Anna Smith (President of The Critics’ Circle) and was awarded to James Harvey’s Cloud.  The double award winning film was described as, “simply stunning”.

Dan McGrath, Curriculum Manager Film Studies, and Jane Thomas, Subject Tutor for Media and Film Studies, commented, “The event was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the creative arts and successes of young creatives across the sector and seeing our students recognised for their excellence was an added bonus!”
