Today the spotlight is on modern history where students are taking part in many projects outside of the classroom.
History is a well respected academic subject and is accepted by all higher education establishments as a suitable qualification for a wide variety of degree courses. The skills learnt are useful for a variety of careers including law and local government, as well as museum and archive work.
Our modern history students are involved in an exciting Italian study project which is supported by Royal Holloway University and led by Professor Giuliana Pieri, Head of School for modern languages, literatures and cultures.
There are a number of different strands to the project, including an exhibition on Italian Futurism Art and History as well as the Comparisons between World War One memorials in England and Sicily.
For the art strand, history and graphic design students from Farnborough have worked alongside their counterparts from Queen Margaret’s School in York to curate an exhibition called Interdisciplinary Futurism which featured at the Tate Modern on Monday 13 February 2017. Read more about the exhibition here.
The Comparisons between World War One memorials in England and Sicily strand has seen students team up with our sister school in Ragusa, Sicily to investigate how the memory of WWI has been constructed through memorials in their local towns. Students in both locations have then used Googlechat to compare and discuss how memorials have been shaped by different social, cultural and historical legacies.
Both strands have enhanced students’ organisational and teamwork skills as well as allowing them to engage in their local environment and build a broader understanding of wider historical studies.
