In the 2016/17 season, the College women’s football team regularly attended the Super 7’s competition. This is a tournament set-up by Hampshire Football Association to focus on improving participation of female students in football in local colleges. It has been evident that this has been hugely successful and in its sixth year, the standard of play at the competition was at an all time high.
Colleges enter and compete in a round robin tournament with Power Points on offer for the top four finishers each month. These Power Points are then tallied up to produce an overall winner at the end of the season. The commitment and consistent performance levels of the Farnborough team meant they backed up their win on the 28 September 2016 with the accumulation of enough Power Points over the season, to win the overall competition.
It was a great achievement by a very dedicated group of students and comes as a well deserved reward for those 2nd year students who have been involved in the team over their time at College. One of the star players, Evie Kenna is off to America on a football scholarship in the coming months and we wish her well. She was ably backed up by consistent performers Izzy Woods and Natasha Masters who always gave impressive performances. It was great to see the positive influence and contributions of the 1st year students; Ayse Flack proved what a talent she is in goal and Emma Verrinder played a range of roles to great effect.
Rob Savory, Curriculum Manager for sport and women’s football coach said, “This is richly deserved by the team. After the success of the men's 1st and 2nd teams this season, I am really pleased the ladies have something to show for their commitment and skill. I hope they all continue to build on this experience and keep playing the game”.
