It’s not every day you see Snow White mingling with American GIs and Naval Officers, but on Saturday night at the Music Department’s 1940s Dinner Dance this was possible!
Following the success of this event two years ago we expanded into the Sports Hall – and again it was a sell-out! The hall was decorated with acres of bunting to conjure up images of the period. Guests fully embraced the dress code of ‘Vintage 1940s or Black Tie’, and also decorated their tables in keeping with the theme.
On arrival, guests were greeted by ‘Jazz and Tonic’ Ensemble, playing a variety of toe-tapping numbers. The dance floor was packed during and after the bring-your-own-picnic dinner, while Chamber Orchestra performed a variety of popular Disney waltzes, interspersed with Big Band playing traditional numbers from the era – so everything from ‘’When you Wish Upon a Star’ to ‘In the Mood’. We were also treated to ‘The Three Belles’ (Rhiannon Pooley, Charlotte Baker and Emily Morrison) singing close harmony numbers such as ‘Little Bugle Boy’ and ‘Mr Sandman’. The delighted audience was captivated during Choral Society’s rendition of ‘Tea for Two’ and ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ – you could hear a pin drop during the rests!
After Dinner the Raffle was drawn. Eight lucky winners went home with some wonderful prizes and £390 was raised in aid of The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
The evening was rounded off by ‘Sixth Spice’ Jazz Ensemble, which left guests packing the dance floor and not wanting to leave. What a way to finish this year’s concerts; don’t forget where we are, second years – you’re always welcome to come back to our concerts any time!
