Film makers Televisonary, visited the College recently to film health and social care lessons which are taught using multi-sensory techniques. This was part of a Department for Education funded project to record a series of tutorials on this style of teaching for students with dyslexia. The British Dyslexia Association will publish these sessions, giving teachers the tools to improve lessons for students of all abilities.
Susie Nyman, Curriculum Manager for health and social care was filmed teaching the cardiovascular system using Play Doh, music and a giant ‘walk in’ heart. She said, ‘The experience was absolutely fantastic. The room was electric, singing parts of the heart to music really helps recall.’
The students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the filming. Second year student Jenny Hanvey commented, ‘As a dyslexic student myself, multi-sensory lessons are incredibly beneficial to me. Since coming to College and studying health and social care, I've been able to explore learning creatively which is not only fun, but more memorable when it comes to exams and assessments. Our teachers allow us to work to our individual strengths.’
