Senior Maths Challenge 2017 - update
Posted on 28 November 2017

This year 587 of our Maths students took part in the Senior Maths Challenge and the results were outstanding – our best year yet. Our students were awarded 26 gold certificates, 104 silver and 181 bronze. This is a national competition which involves solving up to 25 challenging maths based problems in 90 minutes with only a pencil and paper and where an incorrect answer will reduce your score.

Eight of our students achieved outstanding scores in the Senior Maths Challenge and therefore qualified to take part in British Mathematical Olympiad round 1. Only the top 1,000 highest performers nationally are invited to this, which is recognised as the highest level of maths competition in the country. The eight are:

A2 students Ajanth Sutharsan, Jonathan Carlisle, Robert Nesfield and Elizabeth Squibbs and AS students Callum Hobbis, Elijah Price, Harry Walker and Harry Linehan-Hill.

The top 6,000 students who scored very highly are invited to take part in the Senior Kangaroo competition. This year, an amazing 25 of our students qualified, a College record. They are:

A2 students: Lucas Downes, Michael Mortimer, Harry Dewing, Nicholas Mitchell, Gemma Clark, Akshit Nashine, Molly Fryatt, Damien Toy, Thomas Potter, Kai Anson, Simran Lall, George Doran, Thomas Roberts, Thomas Auckland, Charles Godfrey and Ujjal Sunuwar.

AS students: David Bailey, Ramin Vasanthakumar, Daniel Clarke, Henry Langer, Russ Houghton, David Exton, Harriett Griffiths, Clair Mould and Jayson Munro.

Well done to all involved and good luck to those in the next rounds!

Update January 2018:

The eight students who were entered into the British Mathematical Olympiad round 1(BMO1) went on to do fantastically well - Elijah Price, Robert Nesfield and Callum Hobbis achieved Distinction. Elijah also achieved a Bronze medal and was invited to take part in the BMO2 competition! Only 100 students nationally are invited to this, so congratulations Elijah!

All our students entered into the Senior Kangaroo competition also did brilliantly. David Bailey achieved a 'Merit' award and everyone else achieved the 'Qualification' certificate.

Fabulous effort by all!
