Joshua Burton, Calum Wright, Sophie Blake and Amelia Baldwin
First year student Sophie Blake has taken the top prize in the local round of the Rotary Young Writer Competition.
Sophie and three others, Calum Wright, Joshua Burton and Amelia Baldwin, took part in the challenge to produce a short piece of writing with the theme ‘A Different Perspective’. Calum was ‘Highly Commended’ and Joshua and Amelia were awarded certificates.
The competition is a well-established national event organised by Rotary International, Great Britain and Ireland, with local rounds. Mary Madine, from Farnborough Rotary Club, said, “This is the second successful year for the College - many congratulations to all involved.”
Sophie wrote her thought provoking piece about homelessness and commented, “The competition was a fantastic experience! I really enjoy writing and being creative and I’d love to become a published author.” Click here to read Sophie’s poem.
Calum, who was inspired by current affairs for his poem, added, “This was such a fulfilling personal project and I was so pleased to be recognised for my piece.”
Dominic Eady, Senior Curriculum Manager for English said, “I’m very proud of Sophie, Calum and the rest of the group who took part, for their hard work and success in this competition. It’s a great achievement and reflects the talent and high standards in our department.”
