In early February, 14 students who study English Language, French, Spanish or German at the College took part in the UK Linguistics Olympiad. This is a very challenging competition for which the participants have to sit a two and a half hour exam with questions in five different languages, which this year included tasks in Harmongolian, Ndebele and Braille.
Two of our first year students, Grace Cubin and Rhia Coombes, and one of our second year students, Lucy Thickett, achieved very high marks in the exam and received Bronze Awards, placing them in the top 25% in the country.
Another of our second year students, Evan Caton, was in the top 5%, achieving a Gold Award.
Many congratulations to these four students and all those who took part; the study of linguistics is clearly on the rise as the number of our students applying for Language related courses is higher than ever before!
