This week the spotlight is on our health and social care department, who have been focusing on health promotion.
As part of the College’s ‘Health Promotion Week’, students presented their own health and wellbeing campaigns to their peers and set up different information stalls covering topics ranging from smoking and vaping, to mental health issues, healthy eating and stress. The week was a wonderful success, and all the staff and students who visited the stalls enjoyed the homemade stress balls!
The resources the students produced have also been used to support others outside of the college. The results from their research have been used at the Hampshire Sixth Form Colleges Nursing Training on ‘Smoking and Vaping Amongst Young People’. In addition, three students have made a mental health video which is being used to help with insight into students’ personal experiences by Reading University.
In the lead up to the week, students attended talks from health industry professionals. No Limits Help, based in Hampshire, informed students about sexual health, the risks associated with STIs and how countywide health campaigns are run. Students also learned about the work of North East Hampshire’s school nurses and their role in health promotion and immunisation programmes.
Dom Dufour, Subject Leader for Health and Social Care commented, “The talks gave students a real insight into how health promotion campaigns are run in the local area. The students’ own promotions were also fantastic, showing a great deal of insight into a range of different health issues such as mental health, the risks associated with excessive drinking and sexual health.”
Dr Nyman, Curriculum Manager for Health and Social Care said, “It is always fantastic for our students to share their expertise on health promotion with other members of the College community. Our students are wonderful ambassadors for the College, and it was amazing to see them using their communication and employability skills and enjoying working together as a cohesive team. It was an amazing success, staff and students were impressed with the displays and loved the return of the homemade stress balls!”
