Zonta International is a leading global organisation of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Zonta International encourages young women to develop their leadership potential and recognise achievement through a programme of awards. The Young Women in Public Affairs Award is open to young women aged 16-19 who can show leadership potential, a commitment to their community and an awareness of women’s human rights and equality in the UK and beyond.
We are pleased to announce that second year student, Florence Marks was awarded first place for the Guildford Club Award, one of only three clubs in the UK. She was given a cheque for £250 and a certificate during a presentation at the College. The College were also presented with a trophy inscribed with Florence’s name to keep for this year. Second year student, Chloe Williams was the runner up and received a book token worth £25. Congratulations to both of them.
Florence said, "I'm immensely proud to have won Zonta's Young Women in Public Affairs Award. Zonta is an international organisation that promotes female equality, respect and security from local grass roots programmes to global initiatives at the UN. To be associated with such an inspiring cause is amazing. I am very thankful to the Zonta officials who came into college, to my Personal Tutor Russell for encouraging me to enter and my inspirational and supportive teachers at College.”
Russell Hume, Personal Tutor commented, “The College has a long standing association with Zonta, with award success in the past. It is great that the link continues and together we are able to inspire and facilitate opportunities for these young women in the fields of gender equality and the empowerment of women.”
UPDATE - 13 June 2019
We are delighted to announce that, since this article was released, Florence has won first prize in the Young Women in Public Affairs District Awards. There were only three prizes to be won within District 29 which includes 74 clubs in four areas with nearly 1,800 members from France, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Russia. Florence will receive 1,500€ as her reward for winning the competition and has been invited to the Zonta Conference which takes place in the Netherlands in early October.
Russell Hume, Florence’s Personal Tutor commented, “It is wonderful for Florence to be recognised in this way, and we are extremely proud of her at the College.”
