British Esports Championships
Posted on 29 May 2019

This term, the College’s Esports team, the Farnborough Falcons, took part in the Grand Finals of the British Esports Championship in Birmingham. Playing live at the National Exhibition Centre at Insomnia 64, both teams faced off against Sunderland Seers in both games, ‘Overwatch’ and ‘League of Legends’, for the title of the first College’s Esports Champions.

A group of 30 students travelled to the venue to cheer the teams on as they played live on stage for title of champions after qualifying by emerging victorious in the season 2 championship. Special mention goes to second year student Paul “Redsocks048” Middleton who was crowned the Most Valuable Player of the series for his amazing performance as Nunu and Vi. Both teams played incredibly with ‘League of Legends’ Falcons winning the championship and the ‘Overwatch’ Falcons team finishing with a very respectable runner-up position.

Sameer Mazhar, Head of the Esports Teams at the College said, “It was an amazing experience and both teams should be very proud. They played with incredible dedication and enthusiasm throughout both the season and in the finals as they played two great series against their season long rivals Sunderland College”.

As the winners of the ‘League of Legends’ Championship, the Falcons team had the amazing opportunity to meet and train with Excel Esports at their top-class training facility in Twickenham Stadium which provided a brilliant insight into the continuing growth of Esports in the UK scene and the exciting opportunities available. Thanks also goes to the Sunderland Seers in ‘Overwatch’, who in a stunning display of sportsmanship and friendship, donated their prize of a training session with the British Hurricanes team to the Farnborough ‘Overwatch’ team.

With this year’s Esports activities winding down, all of the Farnborough teams are getting ready for season 3 of the championship starting this September. Massive thanks goes to all the players and, in particular, the second year players who will now be leaving college and taking their next steps.
