Second year BTEC music performance students recently organised an electrifying show at The Boileroom in Guildford as part of their final Unit 24 assessment. The ‘Music Project’ Unit requires students to plan, organise and perform the entire event.

The assignment is an opportunity for the students to gain first-hand experience of organising an event, from forming bands and designing setlists, to sourcing the venue and promoting the show.

The ‘In The Pipeline’ event consisted of eight bands performing an extensive range of genres, from modern indie rock, intimate acoustic/jazz duets and energetic punk to classic rock/metal anthems - some bands even performed their own original material. Tracks such as ‘Creep’ by Radiohead, ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ by Arctic Monkeys and ‘Girls’ by The 1975 got everyone dancing and singing!

The event sold over 140 tickets and everyone performed brilliantly. It was a fantastic show and all of the students enjoyed celebrating the completion of their two year music performance course.

Caroline Hordley, Curriculum Manager for music performance commented, “What an incredible achievement for all the students involved. Their performances were simply outstanding and the support they had from the audience was just amazing. It was near impossible to stop yourself from joining in!”

Second year student and a member of the band Viva, George Gill said, “The end of year Boileroom gig was one of the best gigs I’ve ever played and felt like an appropriate end to a thoroughly enjoyable two years. Everybody there had a good time. For a lot of the students, it didn’t feel like an assessment as we were enjoying performing so much”.
