Five Farnborough students recently took part in the University of Cambridge’s internationally renowned competition, ‘The Cambridge Chemistry Race’.
Now in its sixth year, the competition involves teams of sixth form students’ battling against each other to solve unusual chemistry problems. Teams have two hours to answer 60 questions, with each right and wrong answer determining how many points they are awarded – whichever team gets the most points within the time limit, wins!
This year, due to the pandemic, the competition was hosted online using a platform called ‘Gather’, a pixelated virtual space where users can walk around rooms and engage in video conversation based on their proximity to one another. Students were also able to attend the competition’s virtual opening and closing ceremony, which was hosted on YouTube.
The College’s team, called, ‘The Farnborough Free Radicals’, was made up of second year chemistry students Mohammed Younis, Abi Turner, Toby Fotheringham, Mia Carroll and Alicia Houghton. The team worked fantastically together and earned themselves an amazing 85 points! Overall, the team came in 19th place out of 42 teams, a wonderful result! Congratulations to the students involved, and we look forward to taking part again next year.
