At the beginning of December a group of second year sport students planned and delivered two days of high quality sport at the College for unit 8 of their vocational course.

Unit 8, which covers organisation of sports event, is designed to develop skills in planning, promoting and delivering a sports event.  The south east regional qualifiers for the Association of Colleges National Championships gave the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge the students have developed over the past few months.  The students invited eight colleges from across the region to compete in badminton and indoor cricket, which required them to work on everything from communication and marketing to coordinating officials and timetabling fixtures.

The badminton tournament saw eight teams play their way through the group stages into the knockout competition.  Congratulations to first year student, Lottie Sweby who made it to the final!  Lottie narrowly missed out on winning the overall female competition, however still qualified for the AoC finals weekend which takes place in April 2022.

The cricket tournament was made up of eight mixed college teams, playing in two groups.  The winners and runners up of each group entered the knockout stages.  Our Farnborough team were narrowly defeated in the semi-finals to the eventual winners - Barton Peveril.

Sam Wilson, Sport and PE Enrichment Co-ordinator, said, “The students did a fantastic job over the course of the two events - their organisation and professionalism was superb.  As a group they worked brilliantly, solving any potential problems and making the experience for all the participants, coaches and officials a positive one.  The feedback received from the other colleges was really positive so the students can certainly hold their heads up high and know they have represented the College brilliantly.”

Sam Voight, Curriculum Manager of Vocational Sport, commented, “The effort and organisation the students put in for this part of their course was outstanding.  The students really rose to the challenge of hosting these two events and did themselves and the College proud.  They worked extremely hard on planning the day, and came together as a team to overcome several challenges to deliver two very successful days of sport.”
