The College recently took part in The Roche Court Educational Trust’s ARTiculation Prize for a second year running. ARTiculation is a nationally acclaimed annual event which promotes the appreciation and discussion of art. The competition is open to students aged 16-19, and aims to develop their confidence and ability to express their opinions, thoughts and conclusions. Each student delivers a 10 minute illustrated presentation to an audience about a work of art, artefact, or architecture of their choice. Adjudicators then assess each presentation, looking at content, structure, delivery, and the originality of the speaker’s approach and unique potential.
This year the regional heats were held at The Lightbox in Woking, and second year student, Jemima O’Neill represented the College by presenting an excellent piece on the Watts Chapel, which was insightful and captivating.
Lead judge, Andrew Ellis, praised Jemima for an incredibly strong structure. She was able to successfully convey to the audience how it felt to be present in the chapel, by communicating the personal influence that the objects and artworks in the building had on her. Jemima’s presentation was described as “superb” and she was commended for the great photographs that were included.
Both teachers and speakers from other schools commented on how inspired they were to visit the Chapel themselves, after hearing Jemima’s fantastic presentation. Despite missing out on a place in the national final, Jemima was awarded a membership to the ARTiculation Alumni Network – congratulations!
Penny Willis, Fashion Textiles and Fine Art Subject Tutor, said, “I would like to congratulate Jemima for getting to the regional heat and her commitment to this project. All the hard work Jemima put into her research of Watts Chapel, and the practice she put in to become such a confident public speaker, has really paid off. Well done Jemima!”
