In November last year, 239 of our mathematicians competed in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematics Challenge.  Our amazing students achieved our best ever results - 46 students achieved a Gold certificate (awarded to the top 11% of all participants), 80 students achieved a Silver certificate (awarded to the top third of participants) and a further 86 students achieved a Bronze certificate (awarded to the top two thirds of participants).  Congratulations and well done to all who took part - we are really proud of your successes!

Those who achieved the Gold then qualified for further rounds of the competition.  37 students sat the Senior Kangaroo paper, and six students took part in the first round of The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO1).  

In the Senior Kangaroo, 11 students achieved a Merit - a real achievement in a very tough competition.

The BMO1 examination is one of the most challenging mathematics competitions nationally.  The three-and-a-half-hour exam is highly competitive and challenging – out of the 64,000 bright mathematicians who participated in the Senior Mathematics Challenge, only around 1,000 of the very highest performers qualified for BMO1.  In December last year, six talented mathematicians took part in the BMO1.  First year students, Adam Bascal, Dylan Knight and Johnny Sammon, and second year students, Dylan Ng, Euan Worth and Ian Cowburn all qualified.  A huge congratulations goes to Euan and Johnny who received a Distinction and qualified for round two, which only 100 students across the UK are invited to take part in!  This was an outstanding achievement, and one which cannot be understated.  We also congratulate Ian for receiving a Merit, with only one mark off a Distinction, putting him in the top 30% of participants; a fantastic result.  

Following on from his success with the BMO, Johnny was invited to attend the International Mathematical Olympiad training camp for a week at Leeds University in January.  He also has been accepted onto the Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists (PROMYS) Europe which will be held over the summer at Oxford University. Students from all over Europe apply for this programme and only around 28 students are accepted, so this is a brilliant achievement.  We wish him well with the programme.

Second year student, Euan, said, "I found that the experience of these competitions pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me explore things I wouldn't have otherwise tried.  I really think this helped me become a better mathematician and student."
