The National Theatre London
Our English Literature students recently visited The National Theatre in London to watch ‘The Importance Of Being Earnest’.
Aurelia, first year student, shared her take on the performance.“I thought it was more than witty - it is a modern celebration of how far removed we are today compared to the previous duality of constrictive gender norms. I found that this interpretation emphasised the view that Wilde may have implied that the social class of his time had superficial exteriors disguising not only 'unacceptable' etiquette - but desires as well. Performative personalities will always exist throughout society - so why not acknowledge their presence for what they are? The random insertion of modern culture references throughout really captured the playfulness of this comedy and had us as college students all the more engaged. This felt like a nod towards how its theme can be applied universally. The interpretation that the performance brought was incredibly beneficial to expanding our analysis on this text. I would recommend it to anyone looking for humour which translates across the ages.”
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this enriching experience and the opportunity to view the live performance.
