This term, the college's extra-curricular enrichment events have kept student life vibrant and diverse, offering everything from academic enrichment to cultural celebration and competitive sport. With over thirty clubs and societies, including the Law Society, Film Club, and Chemistry Society, driving student activity, the campus has hosted a range of valuable and exciting events.
Academic Enrichment and Career Focus
Students benefited from several high-profile events connecting them with industry experts and college alumni:
- The Business Department hosted a two-day Business Outreach event in October, focused on career pathways in business. Among the visiting guest speakers were thirteen former students who returned to the college to share their post-sixth form experiences.
- October also saw the return of the annual IT and Computing Day, which featured a strong line-up of guest speakers, including ex-students sharing their career journeys, and representatives from Southampton Solent and Winchester University's computing departments. Other highlights included talks on 6G technology and leveraging digital footprints in AI and data industries.
- Creative Kickstart Week ran in November and offered talks covering diverse creative fields like architecture, illustration, and film-making. A key speaker was two-time Bafta award-winning animator, Max Tyrie, who discussed VFX work, including his involvement with The Amazing Spiderman.
Cultural Celebrations and Community Spirit
Our diverse student body was celebrated through engaging cultural events:
- The African-Caribbean Society marked Black History Month in November. Students were treated to several performances including a cappella singing, traditional drums, and poetry, and were able to purchase traditional food treats such as chin chin and jollof rice.
- The Nepalese Society held a mini celebration for Dashain in November where they put on a fabulous display of dancing and served Nepalese treats such as momo and pan puri.
- A short remembrance service to mark Armistice Day was held in November and included a two-minute silence at 11:00 AM, a reading by a member of the Student Union, and a performance by the Chamber Choir, honouring the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our freedoms.
Competitive Sports: Volleyball Victory
A historic first took place on November 24th, with a Student Society vs. Society Volleyball Match. The Filipino Society took on the Nepalese Society in a competitive and exciting game. With a packed and noisy audience, the Filipino Society (who had their own mascot) won with a narrow score of 37-36.
As the term concludes, we look forward to seeing what further exciting activities and impactful events our clubs and societies will bring to the college next!
