Our students outside the BFI
French students recently attended a study day at the BFI Southbank to learn about the style and themes of the French New Wave and its impact on contemporary French cinema. The morning consisted of a clip-based presentation introducing the concepts of the French New Wave, and using scene analysis to reveal how it influenced the style and themes of contemporary French films such as La Haine, Entre les murs and Amelie.
Students had the opportunity to learn about film language, and to gain a deeper understanding of the New Wave techniques. They were able to take part in the session by answering questions and reflecting on the clips.
Reflecting on the day Alice Gifford, Curriculum Manager French said "This event was conducted entirely in French, and it was very pleasing to see that all students were able to understand most of the session. We watched a French movie in the afternoon "Bandes de fille", which is set in a French estate. The movie prompted many discussions and questions and it was interesting to hear different ideas and interpretations of this movie from the students. Watching French movies and debating about their meanings. What a great way to experience French culture!"
