The photography department recently encouraged their students to enter a photography competition run by Parity, a charity who enable adults with multiple disabilities to move forward with their lives, and continue to be a part of the wider community. To celebrate Parity for Disability’s 30th anniversary, the charity invited the public to submit a photograph for their ‘Celebrate our Community’ competition – the only criteria being to submit an ‘image that makes you happy’.
Congratulations to two of our first year photography students, who were awarded prizes in the 11-18 category. Hayley Waterlow won first place for her coastal landscape photograph, and Mia Rutherford was awarded third place for her striking black and white shot of a tree.
Hayley Waterlow, commented on her winning photograph, “My photograph was taken on holiday in Cornwall on some nearby cliffs. This location was particularly appealing to me due to its tranquil atmosphere and the display of flowers present on the rock face. I took many photographs in this location, however this one stood out to me as my favourite as it shows all the aspects of the sea and nature, as well as a slightly shallow depth of field. After being unsuccessful in previous photography competitions, I was surprised to have been awarded first place! I really enjoyed this competition; it allowed me to express my ‘happy place’ in any form I desired, giving me lots of creative freedom.”
Mia Rutherford, said, “I frequently walk my dog around Frensham Pond and I decided to take a new route that I’d never taken before. I saw this unusual, unnatural-looking tree which I thought would make a great photograph! I positioned it in the frame so that it filled the composition, which makes it appear much larger than it was in reality. I submitted the photograph hoping that the judges might find it as interesting as I did, and I am pleased to say they loved it! Being awarded third place was really uplifting as a young photographer!”
