Our students and the choir
Recently the College’s Chamber Choir teamed up with Guildford Cathedral Choir to sing Evensong at the Cathedral.
The choir, which consisted mostly of students with a couple of staff members, learned the music for the service in the first few rehearsals last term. Some of the music was very different in nature to music they have previously sung before such as psalms, which are to be sung in a spoken-rhythm nature. Katherine Dienes-Williams, Master of the Choristers of Guildford Cathedral, came and spoke with the choir about life as a church musician and pathways into similar careers.
The Magnificat was 'Dyson in F' which El, First Year student sung with ease followed by Carlos, First Year student, giving a beautiful rendition of the bass solo in the 'Nunc Dimittis'. André da Silva, Music Enrichment Lead, conducted the 'Nunc Dimittis' with Katherine Dienes-Williams conducting the rest of the service with the Chamber Choir singers intermingled with the Guildford Cathedral Choir.
We are looking forward to strengthening this relationship with a yearly collaboration between our Chamber Choir and Guildford Cathedral Choir and thank Katherine and the rest of the team for welcoming us and hosting us.
Stuart McSweeney, Curriculum Manager for Music and BTEC Music Performance Subject Tutor said; “The choir did themselves, the department and the College proud. Their togetherness, focus and professionalism was first rate and they blended with the Cathedral Choir with ease. We are proud of our Chamber Choir’s performances and look forward to the next ones coming soon!”
